WTA Finals: Swiatek and Sabalenka Secure Semifinal Berths
Swiatek Nears Year-End No. 1 Ranking
After a thrilling round-robin stage, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka have emerged as the semifinalists at the 2023 WTA Finals. By securing their spots in the last four, both players have already earned 650 ranking points and a hefty slice of the $5,122,600 prize pool.
A Win Away from Glory for Sabalenka
Sabalenka had the chance to clinch the year-end No. 1 ranking for the first time in her career. However, Swiatek's triumph denied her that opportunity. By reaching the semifinals, Sabalenka will still finish the season inside the top two, her highest year-end ranking to date.
Swiatek, on the other hand, has now strengthened her grip on the No. 1 spot. A victory on Saturday would virtually secure her another year-end reign at the summit of the WTA rankings.
The Swiatek-Sabalenka head-to-head now stands at 5-2 in favor of the Pole. Intriguingly, Sabalenka's two victories have both come in three-set battles on hard courts, including one at the WTA Finals last year in Guadalajara.
