France kick-off Euro 2024 with hard-earned win over plucky Austria

Scrappy affair overshadowed by captain's injury

Austria gave France a run for their money in their opening Euro 2024 match, but ultimately the favourites came out on top thanks to an own goal from Max Wöber.

The match was a scrappy affair, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances. France had the better of the possession, but Austria were well-organised and defended resolutely.

The only goal of the game came in the 35th minute, when Wöber inadvertently turned Kingsley Coman's cross into his own net. Austria pushed for an equaliser in the second half, but France held on to claim a hard-earned victory.

The match was overshadowed by a facial injury suffered by France captain Hugo Lloris. The goalkeeper collided with Austria's Marko Arnautovic in the 65th minute and was forced to leave the field.

Lloris' injury is a major blow to France, who are already without Paul Pogba and N'Golo Kanté. However, they will be confident of qualifying for the knockout stages after a solid start to their campaign.
