Two Hurt in Fire at Chevron Plant in Ascension Parish

Firefighters extinguish blaze at plant in Geismar near Gonzales

Roads are open, but residents are asked to avoid the area

Two people were injured in a fire at a Chevron plant in Ascension Parish on Tuesday, July 18, 2023. The fire started at around 11:30 a.m. at the plant on Highway 30 in Geismar, near Gonzales.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office said the fire started in a distillation tower at the plant. The tower is used to separate different components of crude oil.

Two workers were injured in the fire. One worker was airlifted to a hospital in Baton Rouge with serious injuries. The other worker was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The fire was extinguished by firefighters from the Geismar Fire Department and the Ascension Parish Fire Department. The fire did not spread to any other buildings at the plant.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Roads in the area of the plant were closed for several hours, but they have since been reopened. Residents are asked to avoid the area.
